Of the approximately 800,000 total suicide victims, 75% are male, but there is no adequate global policy to prevent and support men. "Tragically, suicide is not as rare as one might think. In 2016, the last year global data is available from the World Health Organization (WHO), there were an estimated 793,000 suicide deaths worldwide. Most were men. Compared to women, men are three times more likely to die by suicide in Australia, 3.5 times more likely in the US and more than four times more likely in Russia and Argentina. WHO’s data show that nearly 40% of countries have more than 15 suicide deaths per 100,000 men; only 1.5% show a rate that high for women. The trend goes back a long way. "As long as we've been recording it, we've seen this disparity," says psychologist Jill Harkavy-Friedman, vice-president of research for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, a health organisation that supports those affected by suicide. One key element is communication. It’s too simplistic to say women are willing to share their problems and men tend to bottle them up. But it is true that, for generations, many societies have encouraged men to be “strong” and not admit they’re struggling. It often starts in childhood. “We tell boys that 'boys don't cry',” says Colman O’Driscoll, former executive director of operations and development at Lifeline, an Australian charity providing 24-hour crisis support and suicide prevention services. “We condition boys from a very young age to not express emotion, because to express emotion is to be 'weak'.” More in link www.bbc.com/future/article/20190313-why-more-men-kill-themselves-than-women

Professor Dan Bilsker of Canada's Simon Fraser University pointed out that it is important to look at the social cause that drives men to commit suicides, which were previously not taken as the main cause, and should. "In the United States, around 35,000 men die by suicide each year, which means around one every 15 minutes. In Canada, approximately 3,000 men die by suicide per year, which translates to over 50 per week. This has led Professor Dan Bilsker, of Canada's Simon Fraser University, to declare that we are in the midst of a “silent epidemic of male suicide." Indeed, analysis reveals that certain sub-groups of men are at particular risk of suicide. This includes (i) divorced men; (ii) military veterans; (iii) unemployed men; (iv) Aboriginal men; and (v) men with mental illness." Deadly child support In this report, authors Brian Hudson, Tara Hudson-Ballard and Alan Meekings have demonstrated, using UK statistics, how lethal child support is and how they push fathers into poverty if their earnings are below average. Anyone reading this report can understand why suicide rates are about 15 times the average among fathers who pay child support. "Parental mortality data from the Child Maintenance Service (CMS), the Department of Work & Pensions (DWP), and the Office for National Statistics (ONS), show that parents who are in arrears with the CMS have a mortality rate 14.28 times higher than the national mortality rate. Arrears is the financial and legal term that refers to the status of payments in relation to their due dates[1] i.e. applies to an overdue payment, and any non-compliance fines that may be levied. This subgroup forms 65.1% of the deaths of paying parents, despite being only 12.3% of that population. 93.1% of the deaths that exceed the national average mortality rate (here on referred to as excess / unexplained deaths) in the paying parent population were in arrears in the month prior to their death. The harsh treatment of these parents by the CMS in the form of methods used to enforce payment can reasonably be considered a contributing factor to the inordinately higher mortality rate of this subgroup. Despite the extensive historical protesting against the CMS and the progressive government investment into mental health support, there is an absence of investigation into the contribution of the CMS to parent death. This oversight can be considered, as a minimum, grossly negligent due to the substantially high mortality rate of paying parents in arrears, and requires urgent investigation. Of 1,013 annual excess deaths within the paying parent population, 93.1%, were in arrears at the time of their death. This gives the ‘in arrears’ sub group a mortality rate which is 14.28 times greater, and the ‘without arrears’ subgroup a mortality rate 1.15 times greater, than the expected rate of mortality when compared with the general population age range 30-50. This large difference in mortality rate between the two groups indicates a strong association between being in arrears and parent death. That correlation is strengthened significantly by the reduction in paying parent deaths in 2020 compared to 2019 which mirrors the reduction in CMS enforcement activity in 2020 due to Covid-19 restrictions. It is commonly understood that poverty is a causative factor in increased physical and mental illnesses as well as suicidal ideation, as demonstrated and addressed by numerous researchers. Melzer et al (2010) stated that those in debt are “twice as likely to think about suicide” [16] and Perry and Craig (2015) address the higher mortality rate for homeless individuals with the average life expectancy of homeless people being 47 years compared to 77 years in the general population[17]. This elucidates to a potential involvement of the CMS in excess parent deaths due to their role in paying parent financial difficulty. Involvement of such has been consistently denied by the CMS and the government ministers responsible, including within FoI disclosure, where it is stated that “Although date of death is held, the cause of death is not, therefore no causal effect or link between a CMS case in arrears and mortality can be assumed from any information provided”.[3]. The correlation between the CMS, parental debt and debt/poverty related deaths places an institutional responsibility upon CMS and government to have carried out adequate research and risk analysis as to the impact of miscalculations, heavy handed enforcement and the absence of a minimum amount the paying parent is left with to meet their own basic living costs. The average paying parent profile, which is based on the average parent under CMS oversight having 1.5 children[26], and was adjusted according to the percentage of parents who have 1, 2, 3 and zero nights contact with their child(ren), demonstrated the same correlation as depicted in Fig.22 and the other 12 profiles for the more specific scenarios. This average profile shows that at a salary of £40,000 per year and a CMS payment of £440.13, the NRP will have a disposable monthly income of an estimated £151.76 (Fig.20). This exampled estimation is only for the situation whereby the NRP is in Direct Pay (i.e. without arrears); should they be moved to Collect & Pay (i.e. with arrears) the additional 20% surcharge to be collected by the CMS further reduces this disposable income to £67.73 (Fig.19). The consequence of this surcharge on the parents’ effective net annual income for each salary band is depicted in Fig.19. This occurs in approximately 34% cases". Someone deliberately spreads information on social media about the problem of male suicide in order to forcefully show that the problem does not exist. "Male deaths represent 0% of all suicides in the U.S.," reads a Dec. 1 Instagram post (direct link, archived link), which was liked more than 900 times in four days. The post shows an obviously edited graphic on men's mental health that changes suicide stats to be zero and adds assertions such as, "Men are less likely to get help, often because they don't need it." Other versions of the claim circulated on Instagram as well. That percentage, of course, is incorrect. In 2021, men accounted for about 80% of all suicides in the U.S., according to preliminary data compiled by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Health Statistics. Based on our research, we rate FALSE the claim that men account for 0% of all U.S. suicides. More than 47,000 people in the U.S. died by suicide in 2021, and the majority of those deaths – 38,025 – were men". When suicides are taken into account and the factors of perpetrators of domestic violence are taken into account through their actions towards victims, the indicators of domestic violence change dramatically, showing a different picture than that created by women's organizations. "Like many predators, Chris’ abusive wife had been trying to isolate him from his children prior to falsely accusing him. False accusations of domestic violence are common with abusive wives and using them to invoke the violence of the law is known as “proxy violence” that abusive wives frequently employ. The panic, hysteria and false stereotypes about men being violent in our culture make it easy for abusive wives to falsely accuse their husbands and ruin the lives, careers and reputations of a man with nothing more than a phone call to the police. Unfortunately, our hysteria over men committing domestic violence serves to destroy men who are the actual victims of domestic violence. The graph below shows the estimated number of deaths, per year, from domestic violence. Implicit in the graph is that when men are abused, rather than fighting back, men commit suicide. If men like Chris Christensen are subjected to severe stress, for a long time, such as losing their job, being incarcerated from a false accusation, losing their home from a false restraining order and being isolated from their children, men are likely to develop chronic, treatment resistance depression that leads to suicide. That is a normal human reaction and is much more pronounced in men due to their unique physiology". " Key findings from the Lost Dads FBSD study reveal: Over 40% (41.9%) of men who approach support services during family breakdown express suicidal thoughts. This may have a key link to the suicide being the leading cause of death for men under 50. For a disproportionate number of men as fathers, the experience following family breakdown can simply be too much. These experiences are shaped by negative stereotypes about fatherhood and masculinity, which limit men’s ability to seek and receive effective support. Negotiating co-parenting arrangements, particularly within the family court system, has a profoundly negative experience for fathers. They expressed despair in their battles for time with their children who were sometimes being ‘weaponised’ against them. Sometimes, parental alienating behaviours were identified, like manipulation of the child’s opinion of the male parent. This has severe consequences for both fathers and their children". "Professor Tonya Brito’s in-depth examination of the pursuit of child support from poor fathers continues to pay significant dividends that extend well beyond family law." In this analysis by the professor, we can learn how so-called "court actors" and single mothers, as a result of their actions and, above all, denying their agency, push a huge number of fathers into poverty, which factors are responsible for about 20-25% of male suicides. These "actors" claim that they are doing it legally, which is obviously not true considering human rights. "Brito’s primary argument is that judges and lawyers involved in child support enforcement fit into four archetypes: navigators, bureaucrats, zealots, and reformers. I do not want to spoil the article by fully presenting their characteristics, but all four types share a desire to make sense of and justify their own participation in the criminalization of poor fathers. As Brito highlights, bureaucrats imagine themselves bound by a set of rules that they have no choice but to implement when poor fathers appear in court. Navigators are more troubled by their role and, seeing no good options, respond by kicking the can down the road—issuing continuances and second chances to poor fathers, while still faulting them for not meeting the demands of child support orders. Zealots and reformers approach the challenge of squeezing payments out of poor fathers from opposite corners. Zealots (perhaps my own quibble with the article is Brito’s value-laden choice to use this label) celebrate single mothers and are not burdened by doubt when it comes to judging poor fathers who fall behind on child support. Reformers—the study found only two such individuals—seek to change the system from within in a way that is more protective of the liberty interests of fathers who cannot afford to pay child support." Men are responsible for their country, and meanwhile women who do not take responsibility are rewarded. What effects does this have on men based on statistics from US veterans. "The suicide ratio among civilians is 4 to 1, male to female. "Yet the suicide ratio among veterans is 24 to 1, male to female. These data points come from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Veterans Administration. In many cases, family crises that follow military service can be the catalysts that lead to break-ups, divorces and painful battles over their children — pushing too many to suicide. "About 90% of veteran suicides come in the immediate wake of a family incident." "About 90% of veteran suicides come in the immediate wake of a family incident," said Jen Satterly, co-founder of All Secure Foundation in St. Louis, Missouri, which assists veterans who are battling post-traumatic stress (PTS) through education, resources and retreats. "The worst thing you can do to a parent is take away their kids," Jim, a combat veteran from Massachusetts, told Fox News Digital (he asked that his last name be omitted for privacy). "It’s the one thing in the world that will make you happy — and when you can't see them anymore, you lose hope."" Suicide numbers around the world outnumber murders, but no one takes it seriously because of the total number of suicides, as many as 80% involve men, but the male gender is not treated by governments as worthy of support and protection. The situation would certainly be different if suicide rates were reversed between the sexes. "Governments spend a lot of money, energy and time trying to minimize murders, but the truth is that the number of people who die by suicide outweighs the number of murder victims by several times." The number of suicides in the UK is at its highest in 20 years and there are more victims than car accidents, but the government will not undertake any social initiatives. If the gender ratio were reversed, various government programs would certainly be launched. "Around three-quarters of deaths by suicide were among males, the Office for National Statistics said, noting this has been the case since the mid-1990s. There were 6,069 suicides registered in England and Wales in 2023 - up from 5,642 in 2022." "Road deaths and serious injuries in the UK, in 2022 1,766 people were killed (1,711 in Britain, 55 in NI)." Half of male suicides are the result of parental alienation and child support based on scientific research and statistics from Australia. This confirms that driving men to suicide is a crime against humanity. "It is worth noting that research studies indicate that divorce following the loss of meaningful contact with children is a major factor of male suicide. The death rate in Australia amongst child-support payers is almost double the rate of males who do not have administrative child support assessments. Rob Tiller, a Perth-based counsellor, thus reminds us of the male suicide epidemic currently taking place in Australia, where young, middle-aged, and senior men are killing themselves at a rate of 42 per week. This increase in male suicide, he says, is at least partially due to relationship breakdown and parental alienation, coupled with poorer support among divorced males. According to research by the Australian Institute of Suicide Research and Prevention, almost half of all the suicides by Australian men are directly linked to family court disputes, including child custody and other pending legal matters. When marriages fail, ‘men are less likely to be awarded full custody of their children, more likely to be displaced from the family home, and have less access to their children’. This means the loss of personal identity, social status, and respect. Adding to loneliness and the natural isolation of so many men in their mid-life, these are significant causes the high risk of male suicide. As noted by Bettina Arndt AM: There is solid evidence that the major cause of suicide in this country is not mental health problems but rather the toll taken by family break-up, where fathers often face mighty battles trying to stay part of their children’s lives, up against a biased family law system which fails to enforce contact orders, and often facing false violence allegations which are now routinely used to gain advantage in family court battles" More in link www.spectator.com.au/2024/08/the-epidemic-of-male-suicide-in-australia/
