malepsychology.org.uk/2020/01/12/dehumanizing-the-male-by-daniel-jimenez-book-review/"Daniel believes the thesis of this book explains very well the changes we are currently experiencing. What happens when a society gives more status to women and also more protection to women? Well, women are claiming, and obtaining, greater status, but without renouncing greater protection, or sometimes even demanding more protection (and special protections) than before. For example, we have heard a vice-president of the Spanish government state that women have to always be believed [literally sí o sí]. When feminism demands greater protection for women, it is not breaking with the traditional rules of chivalry or with its gender identity. In contrast, traditionally, men don’t demand protection. The woman who demands protection doesn’t lose her femininity, but the man who asks for it does damage his reputation as a man in the eyes of society, who perceive him as less than a man (in the case of traditionalism) or as a privileged person who pretends to be a victim and has no right to complain (in the case of feminism). Men do not demand protection, men protect others and especially themselves. A man who is not able to protect himself is simply regarded as not being man enough. He has learned many things that he did not know in this book (about rape of men in military conflicts, human trafficking in forced labor, the history of partner and family violence, etc.). In his view, the evidence that men experience discrimination and violence in numerous settings, both disproportionately and/or because they are men, is strong. It is also true that the press, the media and society as a whole ignore these disadvantages and discriminations. Unfortunately, he does not believe that this will change in a long time and one of the reasons for this is that our mind is programmed by our evolutionary history to value women’s lives more than men’s. There are many tests and experiments where it can be observed that both men and women value women’s lives more, consider that the suffering of women is greater and show more sympathy towards women than men (in this Twitter thread you have several links: ). This empathy bias is completely logical from an evolutionary standpoint: women are simply more valuable biologically and genetically than men and men are more disposable. Cultures that have evolved with this bias have survived better and displaced those that haven’t. It has never happened but if a society had sent its women to war, to explore the oceans and to work in the mines, that society would have committed suicide." We disagree with Daniel at this point, because, as we have proved on the example of Rwanda, where more men were murdered as a result of the crime and 70% of women and 30% of men now live there, as a result women cannot find men and the average fertility per woman has dropped significantly. This is a contradiction of what Daniel wrote "this empathy bias is completely logical from an evolutionary standpoint: women are simply more valuable biologically and genetically". "Male problems are invisible or, rather, are rendered invisible. According to Daniel, given the position assigned to the male sex as oppressor and privileged, male problems (those experienced exclusively or mostly by males) are excluded from political discourse, mainly in three ways: 1-Invisibilization or denial. This can be observed in many government surveys or reports on gender discrimination and dating violence in which men are not directly asked about their experience. Examples would be the Macro-survey of violence against women commissioned by the Spanish government and the European Union survey on the same subject. It must be said that in countries like the United States this has already changed and in the main official surveys, such as the NISVS (National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey), both sexes are represented. The results can be found here. 2-Reclassifying male problems into other categories: social, racial, class, immigration, etc. Female problems are gendered, but male problems are not. Previously we talked about workplace fatalities. Well, if you read this article in the newspaper ElDiario.es you will realize that data segregated by sex is not provided. The article refers to “dead people” or “workers”. If you read it in Europa Press the same thing happens. But if you read it on RTVE and you have the patience to reach exactly the end of the last paragraph, you will find the sex segregation. Imagine that the numbers of male and female workers killed was the opposite (that is, 602 dead women and 50 men), do you think the media treatment would have been the same? Do you think that society’s and social agents’ response would have been the same? (that is, none) As Daniel repeats throughout the book, there is no gender spinning for men’s problems. If a problem or violence affects primarily women, it is a gendered problem, but the opposite does not happen. 3-Limiting male problems to purely internal issues based on gender roles. Males suffer social pressures to prevent expressing their feelings and they are constrained by their role as providers and protectors, but all they have to do to solve their problems is to change their attitude, learn how to communicate better and ask for help. This approach is present, for example, in the subject of suicide. The discussion of female suicide tends to be focus on external factors: the living conditions of women, the stress they endure, etc. When talking about male suicide, on the other hand, the main focus is on internal factors: men don’t cry, they have to be tough, they can’t ask for help, etc. Why is it not possible to conceive that perhaps men commit suicide at higher rates because they have harsh and stressful living conditions that turn their lives into hell?" How men are currently depicted in a bad light is described in this article by the woman. "Maid was released last month, and it’s already one of the stand-out Netflix successes of 2021. (It was announced last week that it’s set to take over Queen’s Gambit as the most-watched Netflix miniseries.) The show is catnip for women, and after several late nights, letting one episode tip into another, I can see why. It’s based on the real-life memoir of a woman in the US who fled an abusive boyfriend and supported herself and her small daughter by working as a cleaner. It stars Andie MacDowell’s daughter Margaret Qualley, with Andie herself as the destructive, bipolar (but still hot) mum. Maid is well-written and well-acted, but the secret of its success lies somewhere quite different. The distinctive thing about it is that every male character is an absolute horror. I mean: every single one. There’s the abusive babyfather who swings between violence and remorse; the maid’s own father, another wife-beater; and a slew of shifty, venal stepdads. The bit-part men are shockers too: uncaring landlords, supercilious doctors. Even the men we never meet but merely hear discussed are abusive. The only male initially appearing decent is a chap called Nate who saves our heroine from homelessness. But then he boots her out again because she won’t sleep with him. (‘Classic toxic knight-saviour,’ according to social media.) My power trip lasted for 24 hours. At breakfast the following day, it occurred to me that I wasn’t remotely oppressed and I also began to see why Maid had had the effect that it did. Netflix is offering an analgesic. If you persuade women that all men are bad, then all women instantly become victims. And if you’re a victim, all the free-floating guilt — about privilege, about the planet, about parenting — simply disappears." The father cannot go with his own child, because mothers are behind the discrimination. " A mum has been left "livid" after her husband was "kicked out" of a parent and baby group for "being a man." The woman said she was left fuming after she was told other group members felt "uncomfortable" with her husband being there as she returned to work and could no longer take her son herself." Men are told to talk about their feelings In 1992, journalist Neil Lyndon wrote how he felt the feminist movement was harming men, boys & families Instead of being listened to, he was massively criticised & cancelled What are his views today? Find out "In 1991, Neil Lyndon was one of the top journalists in the UK, writing regularly for the leading newspapers and magazines of the day (The Times, Telegraph etc). In 1992, his career fell off a cliff, or rather was pushed off a cliff, after the publication of his book No More Sex War: The Failures of Feminism, an intelligent and fair but fearless intellectual critique of modern feminism. (You can find a review of the book here, and the revised publication of the book as part of an anthology, Sexual Impolitics, here). Although his book received praise from some quarters, it was attacked mercilessly by many, with much criticism directed at Lyndon himself. The impact on his career was fatal: he became bankrupt and lost his home. At the same time, his estranged wife abducted their nine year-old son and took him to Scotland where she got an order of custody from the courts without Lyndon even knowing the application was being heard. It’s now 30 years since the publication of No More Sex War, and a good time to catch up with the author, and find out whether he thinks gender issues today have changed much since 1992. John Barry (JB): You had a terrible ‘monstering’ in response to No More Sex War. Do you think the book would get a similar response today? Neil Lyndon (NL): Well I'm not sure that it would actually get published today in an orthodox publishing way. A few years ago and I suggested a similar book to one of the country's leading literary agents - it could have been Epiphanies - and he said, “It would be suicide for me to deal with this, even to be associated with it”. He said publishing is now so completely dominated by feminists that's you would taint yourself irrevocably by being associated with it. At the moment when No More Sex War was published I was in really pretty good standing as a journalist in national newspapers. In fact The Times had advertised my column all over London on the sides of buses and advertising hoardings all over London in the summer before No More Sex War, and they fired me within three weeks of it being published! My regular gig was cancelled within three weeks which is pretty much a diametric shift. So to think of what would happen today you would have to think of someone in an equivalent position, for example, a columnist on The Times, who would produce a book that is critical of feminist ideology. What would happen to him today? I think it's unimaginable. Firstly, there's no way he would write that book, and secondly nobody would publish it, so there is no prospect of the monstering happening to somebody else. What is the current US policy of supporting women at the expense of men leading to even more discrimination against men than we had before, all based on the US government's feminist false narrative. "During the COVID Pandemic, the World Health Organization, United Nations, and United States created reports outlining the challenges of women. The CDC released a report on Women, Caring, and COVID-19. No such reports on men were implemented despite the statistical truth that men accounted for 60% to 70% of COVID deaths, and male health care workers were dying in higher rates than their female counterparts. Men in the U.S. lost jobs in slightly higher numbers and percentages than women, but few cared to focus on the challenges men, women, and families faced with an equitable eye toward its impact on the collective social good. CDC officials are well aware that overdose deaths and COVID deaths are predominately male but has neither seen fit to report on Men, Caring, and COVID-19 nor on Men, Caring, and the Overdose Epidemic. There is an inculcated practice when it comes to the exercise of compassion in a society that should be aiming for equity in policy actions and programs. Our leaders knowingly institute policies and create social narratives that have become embedded into cultural beliefs over the past 50 years. Our nation desperately needs harmony, but on some social psychological level there is a malaise when it comes to acknowledging male needs that is in conflict with an ever-present urgency to react and support our nations daughters. Our nation should never let down its guard when it comes to the rights of girls and women, but supporting our daughters should never mean forgetting our sons So why do we give a cold cultural shrug when it comes to the well-being of boys and men in America? There are many reasons we have forgotten about the well-being of our sons, but one that seems most analogous is the way Americans reacted to educational responsibilities in the 1970s. In the 1970s, when men outnumbered women in college by a margin of 60% to 40%, the nation rightly saw fit to increase college and professional opportunities for women. Feminists argued these disparities rested in sexist attitudes toward women, and that is undoubtedly one part of it, but there are other contributing factors.". When a woman loses her interest in sex after a few years, it's not your fault, but her natural changes. In most cases, men were blamed, but the opposite is true. "Baumeister’s article specifically states: “Might wives lose sexual desire because the marriage is turning bad? No: Time-lag analyses indicated that her loss of desire came first, leading to lower satisfaction later. Early levels of (dis)satisfaction did not predict how rapidly the wives lost interest in sex.” While it’s not the woman’s fault either for what is occurring naturally and hormonally within her body, it’s certainly not fair to place the blame on men either. Many frustrated husbands or divorcees can attest to trying every strategy imaginable to bring the “spark” back to their marriage to no avail. Let’s stop making these men feel inadequate and failures as husbands. Men Have Higher Sex Drives and Should Deal With It Another myth this study clears up is the idea that men just want sex more than women and that’s the cause of the discrepancy in sexual desire in marriage. Instead, this study shows that during the beginning of marriage or courtship, women are usually equally interested in sex. It’s that that interest then dwindles over the course of the marriage. This makes the sting all the more painful for the man as it seems the woman is losing interest in him rather than that she just has a lower libido. By acknowledging this, we can begin to understand the distress this causes men, which leads to my next point. Sexual Frustration Isn’t a Real Problem Again, take a look at most sitcoms. Men’s sexual frustration is always used as a joke. Every night the wife lies about having a headache, and the audience laughs. After all, why would a woman want to have sex with her husband? This is incredibly unfair to men. Even on its own, sex is a physical need, and sexual frustration can cause a lot of distress. Moreover, a woman’s decline in sexual interest throughout a marriage causes a lot of other emotional distress as well. For one thing, the man begins to feel unloved, unwanted and inadequate. It’s understandable that these feelings can lead to strife in the marriage. The study even suggests it can lead to depression". "Recently, a friend showed me a sobering graphic depicting the gender disparity in suicide rates between men and women. While females tend to attempt suicide more often than men (and experience suicidal thoughts more frequently,) males are more "successful" in completing the act. There are a lot of reasons for the striking difference along gender lines, but one thing is clear: Men are in crisis mode, and that crisis starts from early adolescence and carries all the way through to old age. When I saw the statistics on male suicide, I realized that the pendulum has swung too far in the wrong direction. I've often dealt with victims of abuse in my immigration practice, and while many have been women, a sizeable number have been men. The very first Battered Spouse Petition I ever filed was on behalf of a man who had been threatened with deportation by his U.S. citizen spouse, a woman who joked about how she could lie about him abusing her, and no one would believe him if he defended himself. The same bias as the error of the justice system always made on the basis of "believe all women" instead of believing the evidence, scientists have found another example of such errors and mental simplifications. "Faces and voices are more likely to be judged as male when they are angry, and as female when they are happy, new University of Essex research has revealed. The study led by Dr. Sebastian Korb found that how we understand the emotional expression of a face or voice is heavily influenced by perceived sex, and vice versa. The paper published in the journal Emotion reveals that both men and women subconsciously make the same mistakes.
