When evaluating research arguing that males or females are more intelligent, both men and women expect men to be biased in favor of men and women to be biased in favor of women. But both men and women are biased in favor of women "Two studies (total N = 778) looked at (1) how people react to research finding a sex difference depending on whether the research puts men or women in a better light and (2) how well people can predict the average man and average woman's reactions. Participants read a fictional popular‐science article about fictional research finding either a male‐ or a female‐favouring sex difference. The research was credited to either a male or a female lead researcher. In both studies, both sexes reacted less positively to differences favouring males; in contrast to our earlier research, however, the effect was larger among female participants. Contrary to a widespread expectation, participants did not react less positively to research led by a female. Participants did react less positively, though, to research led by a male when the research reported a male‐favouring difference in a highly valued trait. Participants judged male‐favouring research to be lower in quality than female‐favouring research, apparently in large part because they saw the former as more harmful. In both studies, participants predicted that the average man and woman would exhibit substantial own‐sex favouritism, with both sexes predicting more own‐sex favouritism from the other sex than the other sex predicted from itself. In making these predictions, participants overestimated women's own‐sex favouritism, and got the direction of the effect wrong for men. "Is it illegal for an employer to reject a qualified job candidate simply because he's a White man? Reader: I was chatting with one of my bosses the other day about a potential new hire. He let slip that the executive team ultimately did not extend an offer because “we didn’t need another White guy.” He literally said this out loud. I was taken aback. To be clear, the candidate was eminently qualified, had made it through multiple rounds of interviews, and was the clear favorite among almost everyone who spoke with him. Further, it’s not like he lost out to someone else — they simply didn’t hire him, and the company started the hiring process all over again! This was a position where a person’s ethnicity/sex were completely irrelevant (it is a data analytics job). Note that the study found once again that women are favored for software engineering jobs compared to men. We know, of course, that feminists argue that women are universally discriminated against, in order of course to support women with various funds. The results of the research refute this myth of discrimination against women, but what is disturbing, they accept without any remarks that there is discrimination against men. Imagine what it would be like to switch your gender here. "The results of the field experiment support the hypothesis that female software engineers experience positive discrimination at the screening phase of hiring processes. This is at least found to be true for applicants with moderately impressive backgrounds and a few years of full-time work experience, and this result could be generalized through follow up research. Female applicants were specifically found to have a 41% higher chance of receiving a favorable response from firms than their male counterparts. While sample size limitations precluded the experiment from including additional applicant variations beyond gender, the experiment succeeded in its goal of detecting gender-based discrimination that might have been present in the market for software engineers. The finding of pro-female bias is consistent with Riach and Rich (2006), which similarly found female computer programmers to benefit in the English labor market. Recalling that Riach and Rich (1987) found male computer programmers to be favored in Australia, the findings of this paper point to a potentially ongoing trend in favor of female coders. Despite potential forces that could benefit male software engineers, such as people being biased toward those more similar to them, “cultural fit” being a substantial factor in hiring decisions, and women performing relatively worse in evaluations that are not gender-blind, discrimination against female applications was not found. Moreover, the observed high level of discrimination in favor of women suggests that “pro-diversity” efforts to increase the representation of women in software development are significant factors in firms’ hiring decisions. The extent to which gender diversity might be desired due to benefits from group productivity dynamics, improving companies’ public image, or even statistical or taste-based discrimination against men, is unclear. Follow-up field experiments that include additional applicant variations and interdisciplinary research into the mechanisms through which gender diversity benefits tech firms could help explain the significant female advantage detected in this paper.
