Statistics in the US do not take into account all men who live in poverty, but through appropriate government programs they qualify men differently than women, which distorts the real problems of men. "On Tuesday, September 13, the U.S. Census Bureau released its Poverty in the United States: 2021 report. The number of males who fell below the poverty line increased by 398,000 from 2020 to 2021 while the number of females declined by 13,000. Although the percentage of females living in poverty in the report was higher by 2.1%, (12.6% to 10.5%) there are other factors that impact our understanding of poverty thresholds and eligibility for programs. Poverty thresholds, which is the purpose of the Census Bureau report, simply measure poverty and does not determine eligibility for certain federal programs. Guidelines for eligibility is more a function of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). This difference may explain some of the reason males tend to have a harder time when it comes to eligibility, particularly when government and state agencies form councils on women in an important attempt to quantify the challenges facing them. The same agencies do not exist for boys and men, so their eligibility is often understated". And what is the help given by gender, as well as other aspects of life, women are more supported than men. "Males, systematically, are not the equal beneficiaries of certain social safety nets and policies. There are more services for females living in poverty than males. Shelters, food programs for women and children, and other federal and state assistance programs provide fewer resources for boys and men as well, excluding many boys and men when distinguishing between poverty guidelines and poverty thresholds. The eligibility outcomes perpetuate disparities because there are more state and federal agencies educating policy makers about girls and women. The White House Gender Policy Council, the Office of Women’s Health, California Commission on Women and Girls, Washington Commission on Women, and other agencies at the state and federal level exclude boys and men, meaning the outcomes of boys and men are less likely to find a place at the table of policy makers. Subsequent research confirms the systemic bias in the assessment of boys in schools. "Girls are routinely getting higher grades in school than boys, a new study reveals. This bias against boys could mean the difference between a pass and a fail in some subjects, and consequently jeopardize their college or job applications. A new research study on sexism between men and women has shown that women do not tolerate sexism towards women but do tolerate sexism towards men. This is the main difference noticed in this study between men and women. "In Study 1, daily comments participants recalled hearing people make about “what men/women are like” were generally negative and targeted the other gender. Men rejected negative comments about both genders, whereas women rejected negative comments about women more than comments about men. In Study 2, college participants could confront an online interaction partner who made an other-gender sexist comment. Women confronted a comment targeting women and had more negative reactions to sexism directed at a woman than at a man; men had equivalent, negative reactions to sexism that did not depend on target gender. Study 3 extended and replicated Study 2 by including both other-gender and same gender sexism. Results showed that (a) women were more attuned to men’s sexism toward women compared to all other types and (b) men responded negatively to sexism about either gender, but were more likely to confront sexism directed at women than sexism directed at men. We suggest that women’s tendency to confront sexism when it targets women but not men may reinforce stereotypes that undermine gender equality".
